Sojourn in Sri Lanka

This post is on Sri Lanka in 2008 (when i was 6). I do remember some places there but not all of it. First we went to Colombo (the capital of Sri Lanka), which for some reason we have no pictures of. The Sri Lankan civil war was still raging whilst we were there so unfortunately some places were too unstable to visit. The war ended in May 2009.

Next we visited Galle. Galle is a major city in Sri Lanka situated on the southern tip 119 km from Colombo and the 4th largest city in the country. There are a few landmarks here such as the city’s harbour, the National museum, St Mary’s cathedral…

We explored the town of Unawatuna and its a suburb of Galle. Its a coastal town and famous for its beautiful beaches and corals. We stayed here for a few nights and went snorkelling and walking in the jungle. We hired a motorbike to do a tour of some places in Sri Lanka.

Our main stop was in Yala National Park which is the second largest national park in Sri Lanka. This is the place that i remember most. It is mainly important for the conservation of Sri Lankan elephants. Sri Lankan leopards and aquatic birds. Yala harbours 215 bird species. The number of mammals recorded from the park is 44 and it has one of the highest densities in the world. The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami caused severe damage on the national park and 250 people died.

Sorry for the poor quality of some of the pictures as they were taken on an old mobile.

  1. Loved your post and pictures. We are going for a short holiday to Sri Lanka this Sept. so it seemed so fitting, that I would have just applied for our visas and then read this right away. 🙂
