Pyramid Power Part Two

On our second day at the pyramids we went alone. First we trekked up to Khafre’s pyramid (the middle one), planning to go inside but it turned out you had to get the tickets at the ticket office.

So TUT (The Ultimate Traveller) walked back down. Thomas was doing a tour with some other people and told me and mum that you get the tickets at the main entrance which was on the other side so we just hoped TUT had found them. It turned out he did and came back on a horse (which we didn’t see but would have been a funny sight).

After a lot of messing about we finally had the tickets and entered just before a pile of Indians came rushing in (they didn’t have tickets either so we had it to ourselves).

This chamber isn’t inside the pyramid but underground so therefore a longer trek downwards. Near the end, you come into a small room which has been carved beautifully and after here you walk through a corridor to the main chamber.

Again this tomb has no hieroglyphs but there was graffiti in black paint saying ‘Belzoni 1818’ by the man who discovered it.

There was one sarcophagus which we all took turns to lie in.

There wasn’t one soul in the chamber (except for maybe a Pharaoh’s!) so that was good.

After resurfacing we had a walk round the pyramid and took a couple of pieces of pink granite.

We made our way over to the Menkaure pyramid and walked up the causeway

and into the mortuary temple made of megalithic sized blocks.

We entered this pyramid as well which had a couple of small rooms on the way down and a small chamber with no sarcophagus inside. Since it was slightly dark we used torches and Jed was looking in every gap with one until he decided it would be a good idea to bash my head with the metal part which was painful.

That was our last, last steps inside a pyramid. After there we explored most of the grounds behind all the pyramids and some in front.

TUT took us on a trek out into the desert looking for the tomb of the birds which is said to have an entranceway to an underground tunnel system containing prehistoric rock art. He had read about it and thought he could find it but after a longish search we gave up, maybe next time TUT!

  1. Beautiful pictures. Moving to Cairo in Aug. so appreciate seeing that you are wearing a fairly heavy coat in the pics. Must be fairly cold right now. Happy travels, Cheryl
